Rest in Peace Kevin Douglas
Chief SCIENTIST, Pixel Science
When I saw it was Val that was calling, all I could think was, "Nah, too soon..."
I met Kevin in 2009 when he hired me as a web designer at Pixel Science. In 15 years we did a lot of work, shared countless meals and stories together. We would talk on the phone until two in the morning about our hopes, dreams, conspiracies and family. Kevin was a big brother to me; a mentor and friend. Kevin was a musician/ guitarist and worshiped Eddie Van Halen. In his mid-20’s he became the tour manager of Blue Rodeo, living a rock star’s life. During that time he met and married the hottest, baddest babe and by 2000 they nested in Calgary, Alberta to raise their two girls.
The dude has stories for days. He had a strong will, a vivid imagination and a, “I’ll it figure out.” attitude. Kevin was no stranger to hard work and long hours. He had an infectious smile and laugh. He loved to cook and entertain. He had a huge heart. He’s the kind of guy that would carry the lion’s share of the burden and never say a word. He was always supportive and shared what he admired most about you.
Kevin launched a successful IT company in 2001, and co-founded Pixel Science in 2007 which he continued to champion until his passing. His business card, read Chief Scientist – It was a fun title we came up back when I still worked under him. Kevin was only 57 when he left us far too young and too soon. At his celebration of life every room was filed with people sharing jovial and incredulous stores filled with adventure, laughter, admiration and love. That was Kevin, all heart.
Passing the Torch
It was me, Val (current director of Pixel Science) and Jeremy (cofounder of Pixel Science) sitting together in the living room discussing what we were going to do about the business. Jeremy said that one particular client had contacted him after speaking to Kevin in the hospital recalled in the client’s words,
"Kevin said something about wanting to pass on the business to some Asian guy..."
I was shaken by this revelation. Hearing Kevin’s wishes and blessing, along with the support of the all present; it was with great honour and humility that Net Butlers officially accepted the call to serve in his stead.

"Sometimes we'd find one of his shoes lying in the living room - like how the heck did that land there?!"
Kevin had an enormous presence. His music, his passions, his energy and his legacy are all parts of his aura that continues to be felt without him here. Kevin has been and continues to be an inspiration on my life. Big brother left some big shoes and I hope to make him proud. I love you man. Thank you for everything you have done. Rest well – I got this now.
Sincerely,
Cyril Wong
